Skilled Regional Visa Subclass 489

There have been significant changes in Australian immigration law this year. We have been receiving many enquiries from people who are unsure if they still qualify for a visa. The Skilled Regional Visa Subclass 489 is still a great visa option!

In particular, changes to the age limit to 45 years and higher English language skills requirements seem to be causing frustration. Further, many occupations from the Skills Occupations List have been removed, or certain occupations have been imposed with caveats. Having caveats apply to your nominated occupation indicates that there are additional requirements that need to be fulfilled.

We have been helping clients to understand their situation and find solutions and strategies to obtain a visa that leads to Permanent Residency and Citizenship in Australia. It definitely has become harder and sometimes it’s like searching for the needle in the haystack. But we never give up and work hard to assist you in making your Australian dream come true!

Watch the video below. Our client Katherine from China was in a difficult situation when she asked us for help. The 28 year old Marketing Specialist was sponsored on a 457 visa when her employer in Sydney went bankrupt. She needed a urgent help to be able to stay in the country. We did a comprehensive assessment of her case and analysed her visa options and requirements. Katherine was over the moon when we told her that she’s eligible to apply for the Skilled Regional Provisional Visa Subclass 489 which is a pathway of the General Skilled Migration program. We quickly prepared all the required documents and lodged the application immediately. Only a few months later, Katherine got her visa granted and is now living and working in the Northern Territory: “That was the greatest moment in my life. I was so happy and I feel my whole world opens up. Thanks to Northern Immigration Australia I have the right to work in Australia, I have the freedom to go for the job that I like!”

It was a very stressful time for Katherine and her family.  At Northern Immigration Australia we are migrants too and we understand what our clients are going through. We are happy to hear how much Katherine appreciated our support: “While waiting for the new visa I was very worried and concerned since I’ve been through that bankruptcy drama in my life. I keep contacting them, however they’ve been very positive and supportive. They replied my phone calls, they replied my emails immediately and always make me trust and believe I’ll be able to get a visa.”

Please contact us, if you require help with your visa, permanent residency or citizenship in Australia.

    Dear sir/madam,
I am Mr Tashi Tenzin writing from Canberra. I am from Bhutan and worked as a youth worker for 7 years from Jan 2007 to Feb 2014. I have also done 2.5 years studies in Australia from Canberra Institute of technology in Commercial cookery certificate III,IV and Diploma in Hospitality. Currently I am on 485 work visa.

I have positive skill assessment from VETASSESS in Youth work and would like to apply for visa that will give me Permanent residence in Australia. I have my wife and two children aged 11 years son and 8 years daughter who are currently studying in Canberra.

I tried for Australian capital territory state nomination 190 visa in youth work but they give only 5 points for state nomination which makes only 55 points. I heard some other regional areas in Australia can give 10 points and there is possibilities that I can make 60 points and apply for visa that can allow me to get PR in Australia.

I have the following points at the moment
    1.Age=36 giving =25 points
    2. Qualification=Bachelor of education from Bhutan which is equivalent to associate degree as per VETASSESS=10 points
3.Two years studies in Australia=5 points
    4. 7 years Job experience in Youth work in Bhutan =10 points
    Total =50 points

If any regional area has Youth Work in the skilled occupation list providing 10 points it becomes 60 points and I can apply for 190 or 189 or any other visa that can give me PR in Australia, I am willing to pay your agent and apply for visa.
Please advise me if something is possible.

I will attach all the documents for your kind reference if you can send me your email address . For further clarification you can contact me at 0449557498 or email at

Hi, I have applied to NT , 489 SS in August 2017, I am the main applicant and my application includes my husband and daughter. My question is: based on your experience , can processing time by NT exceeds the 6 months timeframe? Does case number reflects the actual sequence of applications processing?

    • Manuela Seiberth on February 5, 2018 at 10:28 pm

      Hi Mariam,
The current processing times for 489 Visa is 5-8 months. You can find an overview of processing times here.

Hi Northern Immigration Australia and Manuela,

I have applied for Northern Territory sponsorship visa subclass 190 for Welfare worker as offshore applicant. I have included my husband in it. Do you have any idea how long do NT take to nominate an offshore applicant?

    Thank you for your consideration.

    • Manuela Seiberth on February 14, 2018 at 8:19 am

      Dear Asha,

      Thanks for your comment.
Welfare Worker is on the NT Migration Occupation List. When did you apply? There are a few factors that are important to get a nomination, e.g. your points and the quality and content of your application.
At Northern Immigration Australia we specialise in regional migration. Please contact us, if you need further advice.

  6. Linda on April 23, 2018 at 9:34 pm

    Hi Northern Immigration Australia,

I would like to apply for 489 Regional Visa in Darwin, Northern Territory. I am still looking for a job. I’m an accountant and my ANZSCO code is 221111.
I already applied with a lot of companies but I still haven’t found employment.
Please suggest me what I can do.

    Best regards,

    • Northern Immigration Australia on April 24, 2018 at 8:32 am

      Hi Linda,

Thanks for your comment. Finding a job can be challenging and you are not alone. We get many enquiries from people looking for employment in their skilled occupation. Your advantage is that Accountants are in high demand. The downside is that there are many accountants and the employment market is competitive. Here are a few things that are important to find a job in Australia: excellent qualifications, significant work experience, superior English language skills, great communication and persistence. Keep applying for jobs. Never give up! You only need 1 person to say yes. Keep going. All the best!

    • Katherine on October 17, 2018 at 7:55 pm

      Hi Northern Immigration Australia!

I moved to Darwin since last year. My visa 485 gonna be end up soon. My occupation is accountant but I have no accountant job experience. I graduated from uni and technical college in another state.
My points is 70 now. I’m planning to change my visa to student then go to school in Darwin then would like to apply for 489.
Do you think make sense? Or no chance?
Thank you so much in advance! I’m always reading your blog posts and follow you on Facebook! Very good information.

      • Northern Immigration Australia on October 21, 2018 at 9:39 am

        Dear Katherine,

Thanks for your questions. It’s correct, if you want to apply for a 489 Visa Nomination by the NT Government from onshore, you need to meet the residence and work requirement. NT Graduates are offered an advantage, if they apply for 489 Visa Nomination after completing their studies in the NT.
We are happy to provide you with detailed advise. Please book an appointment for a consultation and visit us at our Darwin office in Smith Street Mall!

        • Katherine on October 26, 2018 at 9:42 am

Thank you so much for your reply and great information.
          I still have few questions.
Is that okay to go to school 1 year in the Northern Territory as any category of school (for example chef, IT, engineering etc..)?
At the time, the visa gonna be student visa?
Thank you so much in advance.

  7. Abhinav on May 20, 2018 at 1:16 am

    Dear Northern Immigration Australia,

Last week I have submitted a 489 application for NT with occupation Marketing Specialist. Considering your rich experience, can you please suggest what are the chances of getting the 489 grant? Also, how long does it take for the NT job to revert? My Expression of Interest (EOI) was submitted in October 2017.

    Please give me your advice.

    • Northern Immigration Australia on May 25, 2018 at 7:35 pm

      Dear Abhinav,

      Thanks for your enquiry.
To be able to provide you with advice, we require more information about your scenario, e.g. have you applied from onshore or offshore? If onshore, have you applied from the NT? Do you meet the requirements?
Please book an appointment for a consultation here and we are more than happy to answer all your questions.

  8. Sadi on May 22, 2018 at 3:30 am

    Dear Northern Immigration Australia,

I recently got my PR in Visa Subclass 190 from the NT. I have a query that I want to move to different state. Can you tell it is possible to move? Or will the NT Government make any problems if I leave. I am also thinking about my future application for citizenship. Will I still be eligible for citizenship if I move to a different state after getting 190 Visa from NT Government?

    Thanks for your help.

    • Northern Immigration Australia on May 25, 2018 at 7:29 pm

      Dear Sadi,

      Thanks for your enquiry.

    Hello Northern Immigration Australia!

I have been reading your blog for a while and also follow you on social media. I have learned a lot through you, thanks for providing so much valuable information regarding visas and immigration. Great work guys!

I’m hoping you can help me with my query: I m planning to apply for NT 489 visa this week under accountant profession.
Is there any chance that if my application is strong that I will get my nomination, or should I wait until 1 July 2018 for applying? I came across few forums where they tell, got rejected because this year quota is full and cannot nominate. What is the best option.

    Please advise.

    • Northern Immigration Australia on June 7, 2018 at 9:46 am

      Hi Alwin,

Thanks for your comment and kind feedback. It’s great to hear you find our service helpful!
With regards to your question: Migration NT still accept applications for 489 and 190 Visa Nominations. The success of your application depends on various factors, e.g. qualifications, work experience, commitment to the Northern Territory, etc.

Please book an appointment if you would like to discuss your application in more detail.

    Hello Northern Immigration Australia,

I am thinking of applying for 489 Visa in the Northern Territory. I see that you are specialists in regional migration and I hope you can help me!

I am a medical laboratory scientist. There are two assessments. The paper based assessment which qualifies you as a medical laboratory technician and the second plan which is exam based. After passing the exam you are then qualified as a scientist. I’ve been skeptical about applying as a technician. Only NT is nominating that for now on subclass 489. Should I wait and write my exam and be qualified as scientist with more visa options or I should go for NT 489 seeing that visa rules changes with time? What would you advise to do? The exam is written twice a year in March and September. I can’t write this year September so I’ll be writing by next year. Don’t know if I should wait that long or go for NT 489 Visa.

I see that you offer appointments online by Skype. I really want your help with my Visa! Can I book an appointment on the weekend?

You have such a great reputation as regional migration specialists – I really hope you can help me!

    Hi Northern Immigration Australia,

We are on student visa (applicant and spouse) under MPA ACCOUNTING COURSE from outside NT and soon will be on 485 visa.
We have around 75 points in our assessment. If we want to move to NT under 485 visa then which visa will be good for us like 190 or 489 to get fast invitation for PR?
And we are looking to get faster nomination. Can you please guide me in that? For example, I want to know about processing time and requirements.

    Thank you!

    Dear Northern Immigration Australia,

I am planning to move to Adelaide. I got the nomination for 489 visa from NT state, however, the condition attached to the visa 8539 which states I can live in regional areas (including Adelaide). My friend also confirmed the same to me and said it will not affect the 887 PR application in 2 years, based on which, we are planning to move to Adelaide. Can you please provide your expert opinion on this, thanks? I am flexible to hear the views and looking to take the informed decision for myself and my family. Many thanks!

    Hi Northern Immigration Australia!

I moved to Darwin in February for my 489 visa. I have lodged my application for skills assessment based on my Marketing experience of 2 years. I have done MBA/Marketing from Sydney. I also have 1 year full time work marketing experience from Sydney, Australia. It is hard to find a marketing job in Darwin so is there any chance to lodge for 489 visa without work experience? For how long do I have to stay here in Darwin after I will be granted with 489 visa?

Thankyou. I look forward to your advice.

    • Northern Immigration Australia on March 13, 2019 at 6:44 pm

      Dear Inder,
